Great Western Trail

Great Western Cattle Trail - An Exciting Era!

The Great Western Cattle Trail lasted from 1874-1886, stretched more than 2000 miles and supplied the stock for cattle operations in Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. In Kerr County, Texas State historical markers indicate the trail where 11-12 million cattle were driven from Texas to Kansas. One marker can be viewed by taking exit 505 from I-10 and heading north for 2.2 miles. MORE
